Hi i need assistance, i have a file server running win 2000. thats where users store their data. there are no programs to manage the storage just plain old shared files. but someone has been deleting the files, how can i trace who did , n how can i prevent users from deleting anything. any pointers are highly appreciated. thanks G.

This environment is the most unsecure type of security that you could have. You
need a professional experienced in setting up a secure network and data control,
as well as making recommendations on what you need, or need to change. It's outside
of the scope of this forum to help in this instance but briefly, you have no way
to track user activity on your current system from a central point. You need a managed
server version of Windows on a totally different type of network and client setup.
If you have a managed network or, have all Win2K machines, you can possibly lock
down all workstations so that users don't have admin rights and can not delete files
for instance. You can institute logging on all W2K machines with PW (password) log
in and tracking. Bottom line, there is more that needs to be done than we can help
with here, or what this forum is designed for.. Your best starting option is to
get a training manual, for W2K on setting it up for a more secure and managed environment..
It's not easy or a simple process depending on your experience level and the hardware/software
involved.

User and group management to restrict who has access to what. This is true regardless of whether you are using all 2000 pro workstations or if you have an actual server OS running that is housing the data. I would also suggest some training on network management as file servers and shares are the most basic of tasks that a new admin takes care of. CK is correct that it takes some work to set up, but it is not an overwhelming task the (s)he makes it out to be.
