I never put a user logon password on my computer but now it is asking for one. How can I log on without one. Just clicking ok does not work.

Because you can't logon to change it you will need to use a 3rd.party software to reset it so you can get in. One of the best is below. Austrumi (v0.9.2 - December 2004) Austrumi is a Linux bootable ISO image for recovering NT passwords and other cool tools and methods, sized for Business Card size CD media (50Mb). It allows you to change any password, including that of the Administrator, on a partition occupied by Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Simply boot the CD and when you get to the initial boot prompt, type: boot: nt_pass This will launch a console utility that will detect Windows partitions on the hard disk and provide you with a menu to modify any user or Administrator passwords on the Windows system. It will even give access to the Windows registry for recovery purposes. Quite a handy utility to keep in your wallet (AUSTRUMI is small enough to fit on a business card-size CD) if you are unfortunate enough to having to deal with Windows machines in your line of work. Read more at http://sourceforge.net/projects/austrumi Download links: Austrumi v0.9.2 (ISO file, 50.9mb) http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/austrumi/austrumi-0.9.2.iso?download also read the Related articles under the Austrumi item. http://www.petri.co.il/forgot_administrator_password.htm#2

Hi DEX, I dont understand the fact that she did'nt put in a password, why has it suddenly appeared? It could'nt have anything to do with Administrator settings, because she has been using OK for that up to now. Perhaps she should check the settings. (IE options; connections) and properties; and be sure that logon and password boxes are unchecked.

Many people by pass the setup at install by just using the enter key, win2k will take this as a password but in time the machine will fail with this type of password. The SAM file will look at the enter key as a password and will kick it out. win2k High Security thing. I think she said a USER password, many do the same for the user password as well but she can try and enter the PC by typing Admin. then hit enter key that may let her in but it's a real long shot. BUT she can't check it without logon on. The IE will not control any part of the win2k logon passwords that's the win2k OS job (SAM file)

Hi DEX, thank you for that, I learn so much from you. I never knew that about the Enter key!! is this something found only on W2K? it's a mighty strange 'toy'... though it does show you the necessity to read all the info. Thanks again.

Even stranger DEX... you'll notice that it's just you and I discussing this matter, no sign of the original questioner?? So much for people re-posting. Ah! well.

I ran into a similar problem when I tried to set up a home network in W2k. I didn't enter a password for a user and now I can no longer access the Windows operating system. The logon screen comes up with the user ASPNET and asks me for a password that I never put in. Is there a way to bypass this?
