w2k after Vista

Hi guys, simple enough question for you chaps! My wife is buying a laptop, but most
come now, pre-loaded, with the dreaded Vista. My question is, can I install w2k after
vista? or is it going to do what Microsoft does best, and give me a hard time. I
have the installation disk for 2k pro. Thanks chaps.

Dell: XP after Vista!

Well, OK, it's not "2000", but I'd bet almost all "2000" fans would gladly take XP
instead of Vista:

--------------------------------------------------------------
Athlon 1.1 - 768 MB RAM = 98SE & XP Home
Athlon 3000+ 64 - 1024 MB RAM = 98SE (@768 MB RAM) & XP Pro
IBM ThinkPad PIII 900 - 384 MB RAM = 98SE & XP Pro SP2
Windows 2000 Server in the basement

Hi DNA, I'm afraid I don't understand your post (I'm a bit slow) Can I install 2k
on an already loaded Vista? XP doesn't feature atall. I have the 2k disk, can I
put it in and let rip without too much hassle? Cheers.

No.. You can't just do that. Portables most often have proprietary drivers so you
need to have the correct drivers for W2K. Next, you will need to wipe out the drive
and most manufacturers will void the warranty and refuse to support your new machine
when you do this.
As for dual booting, you can't do that either as there is no free space on the drive
most likely. You would need to use a utility not included with Windows to shrink
the partition and setup an extended partition/logical drive to run two operating
systems. Doing so can crash an NTFS formated drive.
Setting up dual booting with the MS boot manager requires that you install the newest
operating system last, not first when using the MS recommended way of doing it.
Bottom line? I would leaved it alone unless you know exactly what you are doing
and know you have the correct W2K drivers for the hardware, if there are any. W2K
is old and MS isn't working on new drivers. They need to be supplied from the hardware
manufacturer so you would need to ask the manufacturer of the computer to see if
there are any before trying it. If you do, make sure you have the recovery options
from the manufacturer tested and ready to go to get the machine operational again.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life.

This is what I would do... :)
Go out a get a new HD say a 40gb for about 50.oo bucks
Put the OLD (NEW) one in a box and put it away.
Then install win2k on the new HD, but you'er in for alot of work, because all most
all laptops have very proprietary hardware.
I would send off for a driver disk 1st then get the new HD.

Seems like most the new Vista Laptops won't even run XP without loss of of functionality
. Trying to get one to run 2000 will be even Harder. If you have not bought one yet,
wait for Dell to start producing a couple XP Laptops again, out of popular Demand.

Thanks for that DEX, but I really haven't what it takes to do the work involved,
in terms of know-how. I'd need to sit at your feet before taking it on. Cheers DEX.

Hi Steve, thanks for the tip. CK gave me a link (bbc.co.)
very interesting reading, and it does mention reintroducing XP for it's popularity,
so I will wait for that, being the easier option. Thanks again Steve.
