win2000 crash

my dad's win2000 pro crashed. it mostly stays on the "windows is starting up" screen.
once in safe mode i got it to go to the win logon screen & put in his password.
it says "name-xxxxx" profile cannot be found. something along those lines. i don't
know how to fix. can i put in a xp cd from one of my old pc's and fix it?
