Can't Log On to Windows 2000

I'm unable to Log On to Windows 2000 Pro.

For some reason, I'm unable to type in the form boxes Username & password, & there's
no pointer for the mouse.

"Clicking Enter does "nothing either" even though the curser is blinking in the password
box, & the primary user that is already typed in the box has no password?

I've tried resetting defaults.

Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks.

If you don't have a mouse you can use the TAB KEY but it sounds like you nead to ask the primary user or the Admin. to give you a hand logoning on

You said, "If you don't have a mouse you can use the TAB KEY"

Please elaborate?
TAB Key How?

I have a mouse, Even tried a 2nd one & another keyboard.

Tried resetting to setup defaults, Checked connections, It all worked fine when i
went to bed, woke up, powered up & i'm basicly locked out.

You said, "but it sounds like you nead to ask the primary user or the Admin. to
give you a hand logoning on"

I am that guy.

Try a standard 101 keyboard that can use a serial port. com. 1 or 2 Most computers have one and when the machine reboots the BIOS will see the device in place and let you use it. (keyboard)

1. Have you tried "last known good configuration"?
2. If you cannot get in there, try "safe mode, command prompt; Run "chkdsk c: /f"
from there.
3. If you cannot get in there, enter the Recovery Console = http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654/en-us
(use your Setup CD, if needed). Run "chkdsk c: /f" from there.
4. If none of the above work, and nobody else has a suggestion, I would go ahead
and run a repair install. This is supposed to be non-destructive, but I would back-up
anything in windows-created folders -- my documents, favorites, etc.

For 2. If you get in "safe mode, command prompt", also try running the System File
Checker -- "Sfc /Scannow".

I can't Log On to safe mode either, I don't have the widows 2000 disk as it was already
installed when i got the pc used.

& as for running an installation repair, I maybe wrong But, The last computer i did
anything like that on I believe had pre installed software on the D:/ drive including
windows setup files, accessed by clicking F10, I don't think this one has a disk
in the D:/ drive & clicking F10 does nothing.

So if it's something different than above, I Need Instructions on How to Do That.

I had something like that happen to me in the past year. Then one day I wiggled the cable just the wrong way on my keyboard and it stopped functioning. It was a thrift shop $6 keyboard which had served me well for years. It must have had an intermittent break in the cable. That must be why someone gave it to the thrift shop. So I bit the bullet and got a $10 keyboard at Big Lots.

WITH THE POWER OFF. Try unplugging and replugging the mouse and and keyboard. Maybe it's a poor contact with some oxidation on it and the friction of reseating it will get thru.

It could be the driver files and that would take the product disc in repair mode to fix.

If they are both USB devices, it could be a more expensive hardware failure. If the USB port is not part of the motherboard but is a separate card, you can try reseating the card a couple times. WITH THE POWER OFF because you can produce an inductive surge that will fry a component or 2. I emphasize "with the power off" not to insult your intelligence but because I have fried a monitor once that way. I knew exactly what inductive surges were but I had an absentminded moment. $75 worth of absentmindedness.

Good luck.

co Rich Kurtz
download a iso image of the Recovery Console = http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/1180578731

You might also try "chkdsk c: /r" to check for bad sectors.

I've tried 3 Keyboards & 2 mouses,

Seems to me it's going to take something i haven't got or something i can't get to,
to fix this problem.

If you have absolutely no tools, your best investment would (probably) be a retail
install CD.
