Problems Formatting Hard Drive

Yesturday I formatted my hard drive on my computer because I wanted to reinstall
the OS. I then decided to created an extended partition so I went into FDisk and
deleted the old partition and created a new Primary and Extended partition. I then
rebooted the computer using my boot disk and went to format the new partitions but
the partitions are not being formatted or its formatting the drive very slow. The
progress % kept sitting at 0. I thought about letting it go for a few hours but
that only got the drive 6% formatted. Any ideas on what I can try?

If it's Western Digital use their free DLG (Data Lifeguard) programs which may work
on other brands as well. I've never worked thru the frustrations of FDISK successfully
either. DLG is easy to understand and just plain works. It is not a sophisticated
tool so it cannot repartition without erasing the data. I've never heard of any
freeware that does. Check out all the Drive Utilities:
Disclaimer: I have no connection to Major Geeks. It's just such a great bazaar.
To prove I don't work for them here is a warning: Downloads have to happen in one
session. If you pause a download, you cannot resume.
And Data Lifeguard is hyperbolic hype. It's just a partioning and formatting utility
tossed in for their customers who just bought a new drive. It has no protective
features.

Did you have win2k on the HD b/4 decided to start over ? If so you will need to reboot
with the boot disk and remove ALL the partitions b/4 you start over.
Then setup the fat table ( format the HD)

I managed to get the drive formatted using Fat32 file system. It took 2 hours to
format a 40gig hard drive. Another 3 hours just to install windows 2000. I don't
know why it took that long to format and install an os. The drive partition fine
using FDisk.
I do have a new problem with 2000 now. When I went to install the driver for my
video card, windows says that the driver is not the correct one when I know it is.
I want to getting the computer going enough so I can at least go online with it
again.

Windows is not always right,,, if you are sure the driver is right you can do a
quick check, see if you can use the 256 colors this will tell you the driver will
work if not and you can only get 16, then you will need to update the driver, goto
driverguide.com and have a look around..or the Mfg. of the video card (device)

Does anybody here know of any good free programs that I can use to test the computer
to make sure everything is ok and working correctly?

I can't answer your question (which I stumbled on by accident), but you really should
start a separate thread for this question, and the previous one. By burying them
under an unrelated subject, you severely limit the chance that the right expert will
see the question and provide an answer. Aloha

Anthony - did you solve your problem? I'm betting you had/have a hardware issue.
You never mentioned why you formatted in the first place - usually its due to problems
with current installation. if you then get problems during the install/early use
(eg, driver install), nearly always a hardware issue. Unfortunately I know of no
magic wand - just process of elimination (though RAM is a common culprit - but can
be any hardware item).
