External Hard Drive stops my broadband

I recently bought a 250gb External Hard Drive which works fine when connected to my computer by USB. But when I have both the hard drive and my wireless router connected, my broadband connection starts dropping then turns itself off. They are both connected to separate USB ports and I have swapped them both around and used different leads but to no effect. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Your two USB ports are probably on a hub (internal) and the problem is power. If
you have four ports (two in front, two in back), seperate those devices.
If you only have two ports, I would suggest getting a USB PCI card (assuming you
have an open slot). A powered hub might work but, generally, neither modems nor drives
work well on a shared connection.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day.
Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life.

Win2k will from time to time have a hard time sharing the USB ports,,,but it can be a error in the IRQ that windows has set up for both devices, win2k likes to share IRQ 9 with many over loaded devices,,,you can try and reset the IRQ ,, remove all the other USB items and just bout u[ with the new HD then once win2k inds the device and gives it a new IRQ (with luck) then plug the other usb items one at a time after a reboot for ea. item...win2k with some luck will let you rework the IRQ setting but it's a real long shot with the USB port(s) you can try and add a USB pci card that sometimes will work with win2k... good luck

Hi, has your wireless router got a LAN socket, if so it would work far better through the NIC port on your PC if it has one, just a thought.
