share video file on network

Have a media center Vista machine used to record TV.
Want to watch the files in the basment on networked
Win2000 machine. Set up file sharing. The file is recognized.
When try to play, won't play with VLC,Real, WinMedCntr, etc, got oner error message
about trouble streaming and codec issues.
Do I need to map a drive? Thanks for any suggestions.
