My windows 2000 desktop all the sudden acts strange. Once I boot the computer, I can use it for 20 to 40 mins, all the sudden monitor switches off and CPU dosen't respond. CPU power light is still ON. I had to switch off the power supply and have to reboot. Again, thing continues.....Please advise. Thanks.

Sounds like you are running out of ram,,,when you reboot the ram will be renewed and it will run again. This can also be the same if the HD is almost full of data, windows will just lock up and the same thing must be done to renew the space it needs ...for the VM... It's almost like running out of gas in your car, the lights work but it will not move until you put some more gas back in the tank... =======

How about heat? Could the computer be overheating
after a short period of use? Are all the fans working?

It's a heat issue. Pull the cover off and clean the dust out.
Pay attention to the processors heat sink and fan.
Also the video card unless it's built into the motherboard.
Check all fans including the ones in the power supply.

Good luck!

First place to check is the Event Viewer for error messages pertaining to the event.
If it indicates that an unknown event took place and Windows has restarted, or if
there is no reference to anything between the hang and the restart times, you have
a hardware issue. It could be heat or a bad PSU and, other pieces of hardware, either
on or seperate from the motherboard. The processor has to be running for an event
to be logged or a BSOD to be displayed. If the processor or other critical hardware
items are halted for any reason, then nothing can be written or displayed, and this
is usually due to hardware/power/heat issues. One of the possible symptoms is bad
capacitors on the motherboard so it may be worth a close look at them to see if they
are leaking.

One of many articles with pictures just in the outside chance you may have this problem.
Not a new one on this forum believe me..
