Network really slow after re-install

I just reinstalled W2K on one of my PC's; just to tidy things up and generally start
afresh. Now the network is really slow - downloading a small file (50K) takes minutes
and big files time out. Access to my other PC over the network is almost impossible,
minutes just to open a folder. The PC was fine before and as I was a bit dubious
about W2K picking up the onboard net adapter properly, I installed a 3COM PCI adapter
and repeated the entire install process; from format hard disk onwards - so I don't
think it is hardware. Just the same! I have done a few W2K installs before and
apart from sometimes having to uninstall/reinstall the network adapter, have never
seen any problems. So far, I have just W2K, no service packs as I can't download
them.
I am at a loss to know where to look - any suggestions?

I would try the manufacturers drivers to see if that cures the slowdown.

It's slow on two different network cards, and I am using in one case the same (motheboard)
drivers as worked fine last time and in the other, standard drivers from W2K. What
I am looking for is some way to see what is going wrong. But I'll try a 3COM downloaded
driver, just in case.

Win2k like to share the IRQ for the networks cards...
That may be your slow downnnnnnnn
Take all the cards you can from the MB then reboot window will sometimes rework the
IRQ to let things work just a bit quick..
Once you have your speed back put one card back in one at a time..., if you are using
the PCI card turn off the onboard one in the BIOS...that will free up that IRQ..
Win2k likes to share IRQ 9 with alot of the cards and it will put many of them on
that IRQ...and it will make a bottle neck...slowing things down to a craw..
