we tried to load XP over Win 2000. it didn't appear to work but i think we shut it down before it was finished. we loaded it again and now when the computer comes on it shows two os and asks to choose one. one only shows the recycle bin, the other shows all the stuff on the desk top from Win 2000. we looked in add/remove progams to see if there was anything in there and there is nothing. how can we fix this awful mess??? any advise would be appreciated. we are lost. thanks.

1st. let me say trying to put a new OS over one that's in place is a no no.. But now that you have it's going to take a bit to get it back like it was.. Because you stopped it b/4 it was done you may have nailed the reg.file...trying to get it back at this point may take a bit to long, so you may just want to just start over...load up the XP CD and have XP clean the HD off and do a clean install of XP..then you will be a happy XP user...

You would appear to have an upgrade of your W2K (where you see all the old programs)
and a fresh install (clean install) of XP where normally, only the recycle bin is
on the desktop. This is true if you see none of your programs (on a clean install)
under the programs menu. This is usually a no-no if you have two installs on the
same partition or logical drive.

As Dex suggests, you should start over and do a clean install if you do not need
to save any of your old stuff from W2K. If you do, and the install that has your
old W2K stuff on it seems to function normally and is verified as being XP, then
you can delete the clean install. Trouble is, knowing which is the right folder
so you don't delete the wrong one. That can be determined by looking at the boot.ini
file to see which one is on the top of the list for booting if non is selected by
the user on bootup (or enlist the help of someone knowledgeable to sort it out might
be best)...
