Problems saving image files in PNG format

My windows 2000 computer has some kind of crazy defect when it saves an image as a PNG file; it messes up the text really bad by turning it into big blocks of color and then it takes any non-text images and jumbles them up. This only happens when I try to save in the PNG format and no other, and it happens regardless of what program I use. Can anyone help me?

What service pack is your W2K running? What browser? What other programs are you
using that also don't work with it? Is it the only format that isn't working? Did
this work correctly at one time or never did?

Be aware that this is not a format that W2K natively came with for reading or saving
graphics files. It was added either with a program you installed or when you upgraded
your browser. Also IE6 and W2K (IE6 specifically) will not be compatible with all
of the info in a PNG file. You need XP and IE7 for PNG files to be handled correctly
as IE7 can not be installed on W2K.

I have W2K SP4 and IE6 installed and do not have the option from the browser or in
Paint to open or save as PNG, or in any other native graphics utility that came with
W2K. W2K only came able to save in the GIF and BMP formats natively and I don't
see that IE6 changed that on my system. I do have Corel 8 and 12 graphics suite
installed on W2K that can read/save in PNG correctly though.

So, you have some issues with the software that is using the PNG format code or that
code is corrupted possibly. It isn't an actual problem with the operating system.
The operating system doesn't care whether it's PNG, JPG or BMP. Other software
is handling that. If you installed other graphics software that added the PNG capability,
you might try reinstalling it. If it was added with a browser update then it gets
more complicated. Also could be an issue between the software using the PNG format
and your graphics drivers. Either way, it would be rare that the operating system
would be the issue here..
