SearchSettings.msi

Hi there,
Every time I try to open a windows prog an installer runs and gives the error message
that it can't find searchsettings.msi

A search using altavista only returns answers from yahoo, most of which have been
deleted.

I am sure I am not the only one to ever have this problem but it is odd that nothing
turns up in a search.

A repair of windows 2000 using the fast repair has simply resulted in me not being
able to open outlook express or many other progs. can't even access msconfig as
it says it's missing.
Any ideas please ?

Lets start with "msconfig" it's not a default item in win2k but you can add it to the system32 folder if you want to use it,,just Google the command and put it on your HD.. "searchsettings.msi " this file is on the win2k cd just use winzip and blow it out to your HD with the rest of the msi files..

Hi Sarah, searchsettings.msi as far as I know, is not a W2k runner....neither is msconfig, unless you downloaded the XP version?? Also, how did you perform the 'fast'repair? More info. needed. That said, it does sound like a thorough scan is called for. Do post back, and help will be offered.

Well I stuck the 2k cd in the cd drive and booted up and you get the choice to install
or repair 2000.

Choosing repair you then get the choice to do it from the console, which I can never
understand what to do, or press f for a fast repair in which the disk is checked
and does what it does.

The first time I ran the fast repair it didn't do much so I ran it again and then
found I couldn't load outlook express or IE so I had to re install those.

At least I have browsing capabilities and email back but of course the pesky little
installer still rears it's head.

I had a dam virus a while back called dealio which installs itself via a website
even if you say no don't install. I deleted it and several other files and then
the problem with the installer started.

You can't access the win2k cd when you put it in the cd drive, it won't let you so
I can't just get at the searchsettings bits.

The only thing would be to re install it unless you know of something else I can
do. I really don't want to reinstall it as that will stuff up everything I have
on the machine.

Thanks guys that did the trick.
I had tried hijack this before but could never find where to get the file analyzed.
Once you gave me the link it was plain sailing.

Yes as suspected there were some remnants of the Dealio virus and it picked up another
virus that avg hadn't.

All is working properly again with no more pesky installer messages.
