I had 2000 on my computer when I got it and tried to install XPpro with server pack
but it won't let me use it because a message said that the ID#'s were used too many
times. These #'s came with the disk, now I'm XP'D(xtremely p-o'd My questions are:
1-can I use XP and how? and 2- If not how can I safely uninstall it and get back
to my original 2000??? right now 2000 is not working right but I can use the net.
thanks

Try to describe what you have done, step by step. For instance, what number
are you referring to when you write about an "ID Number" ?

Can only assume that the XP version has been reinstalled to many times and that you
purchased it "used".. Either way it's a suspicious scenerio. Nothing you can do
unless you want to purchase new CD Key's from MS,. That will not be cheap, and they
may not be willing to help you out.. If you purchased it, you need to take up the
issue with the seller.
As for going back to W2K, you are best to wipe the disk and reinstall it from a W2K
install disk that has SP4 slipstreamed into it, unless your install disk already
has SP4. You could try a repair install but unlucky to work since you already tried
to install XP. Best to start over.. :-(

thanks kiwi and dex for responding to my cry for help! When my son installed xp he
didn't finish I guess and everyday for a month when the computer came on a message
would flash saying I had so many days to activate xp, it was working fine. Then I
put the activation #'s in, 4 sets of 4 #'s that were on the back of the book that
came with the disk. Then a message flashed saying that these #'s have been used too
many times and it locked me out. I re-entered the #'s 2 more times with the same
result. I've noticed now that xp has boogered up some of 2000 and I can't re-install
my printer. Your help is greatly appreciated!

When that dialog box is on screen, there is an option to contact Microsoft more directly,
with an 800 number to call. Making that call is the next step. If your son has
erased his install of XP in favor of a new OS, such as Vista (or made the mistake
of running Vista as an upgrade atop his old XP install, considered a bad idea), and
then given you the OS, you may need to provide Microsoft with the Activation number
he uses now for Vista, or some such.
Windows does not have an Uninstall for itself. In order to get rid of XP, you must
manually delete its traces, and that gets very tricky, so the usual remedy is to
use the Win2000 CD to boot up, and reformat the Hard Drive completely to start over.
There is a "Repair" option that comes with Win2000's CD Install setup, that may
work for you, but if you are this lost already, you would probably need a tutorial
for using it, and I'm not aware right now of any good one.
But Google or Yahoo can search out such a web site for you.

If you have a lot of graphics, music, and text files, you need a second storage device,
or your hard drive needs to have already been partitioned to contain more than one
logical drive. CDR or DVDR drives are fine for the use. Drivers, particularly,
need to be saved.
Program files are wiped out by the recommended method of starting from a reformat,
and must be reinstalled as well as the OS (I haven't re-reviewed the entire thread
-- the software used here is terribly crude, and all I've looked at this time is
your new reply).

If you're doing a clean install (ie, either formatting drive or removing and recreating
existing partition), then you will need to backup or you'll lose all your data. How
you backup depends on what you've got. If you have an external drive or CD/DVD writer
and the machine is running well enough to use the o/s - then either copy your files
to external drive (or USB stick if big enough) or CD/DVD. If you have no backup devices
(or can't boot), you either need to buy one or connect your hard drive to another
machine, and save your files there.
You could install into existing partition - into different folder - ie, not winnt
(depending how much space) - which would not remove your files (though backup is
still desirable if possible). Also this would leave existing 'installation' still
on the drive, which could cause future complications.
