I have searched the forum, but can't find the answer. I want to get rid of the logon screen so that when the computer starts up, no input is required from me, not even an "enter" or a "click ok."

Right click on MyComputer/Prop./Advance Folder/StartUp Revovery Button/ uncheck the item called users must use password. then select the user at the top you want to used as the default user desktop ,windows will ask you for a password just use the same one you have setup for that user then the OK button then reboot and if you did it right windows will NOT ask you for a password it will just load up the default user desktop you selected. ====================

I tried the my computer line, and there was no button to uncheck. I don't know if I am on a domain system or not. Problem still exists.

Hi Dwight:

How comfortable to you feel about editing the REGISTRY?

I've never found a dialog box in Windows 2000 that stores the default user identity, and two out of three of my systems with this OS believe they must start with the Administrator, and his (mine) password, instead of my own normal (no password) account. There was never any point in setting those PCs up that I purposely chose such a setup.

In the case of XP, something somewhat similar started after one of the upgrades MS wants installed, and I didn't turn down. Previously, I didn't have to do anything to log on, then without my intervention, I now must start with a mouse click on my acount sign-on name. I'd rather not have to do anything logging on that machine.

Your version of Magic Tweak differs from 4.11, or else the evaluation version omits functions. No such option as "System Tweak" showed up on the one available now.

The REGISTRY tweak to fix this in WinXP is
essentially the same as the fix for Win2K (which I
referenced earlier). If you want the "official"
Microsoft instructions for XP, they're here:

Thanks Jerry for the info I Don't recommend anyone to edit/play with the reg.file unless they are a Advance Computer User...it runs the machine, if it gets nailed the machine will not boot... :( One item out of place will do it ..like a space in the command... The gpedit.msc is a shortcut to the reg file and it's safe for most users... ===========

I suppose I would have to consider myself "Advanced" in computer use compared to the vast unlettered majority, although I seldom venture into any Registry, and certainly not without a fresh backup. It appears that's what I will be doing -- thanks anyway, Dex, but either those utilities you suggested don't include everything in their trial versions, or they've dropped out the part you referred to.

Dwight, I'm surprised no one has mentioned using TweakUI to solve your problem. If you aren't familiar with it, it's a Microsoft unsupported program which allows you to make various "tweaks" to the OS, INCLUDING doing away with the need to sit there and type or click something at logon. I have used it on several Win2000 machines to avoid just the situation you describe. Once you install TweakUI it gets added to the Control Panel. So you go to Start/Settings/ControlPanel/TweakUI. Look for the tab "Logon".

Type in your user name and password, click ok, and you should be all set. TweakUI is readily available around the net. I think Annoyances has it somewhere. Just make sure you get the version that works with Win2000. Hope this helps, Carl S.

Thanks Carl I forgot about that one :), the snapshot I posted was from someone asking how to add a legal notice b/4 logon and it was on the same popup in Magic Tweak so it use it... And Tweakui is listed on the left side on the Annoyance forum. under Software... ===
