I am thinking of upgrading an old computer from ME to 2000. Has anyone encountered
any problems?

2000, is considered a Older Operating System, so no upgrade path exists. You can
do a Clean Install though. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272627
First
Disconnect all external Devices like Printers, Scanners, etc. You can install them
after you get 2000 installed.
Just set your CD rom to be first Boot device,
Boot from your 2000 Cd, and at first Prompt Delete the old ME Partition, then just
continue to follow the Prompts, Create New Partition, Format, and Install Starts.
After go to Device Manager and look for the devices you may need Drivers
For.

You will get different opinions but realize that W2K is a system that was designed
for businesses and professional use where security is important. It isn't as friendly
with some applications and games as is XP Home for instance. It will be completely
different in many aspects than Win 9X systems but will look the same on the surface.
Under the surface it is totally different and is not a DOS system at all.
Upgrading or installing over a Win 9X system may or may not work, but it fails in
many cases so the recommendation here is to back up any data that you want to save,
wipe the drive/reformat and install W2K clean. The reasons for failure is compatibility
in software you may be running mainly, and hardware secondary. W2K can be very frustrating
if you have never worked with it before. It is worlds apart from Win 9X when it
comes to configuring and security options. A better choice might be XP Home edition
(for home use) if your hardware is new/powerful enough to handle it, but you should
run the upgrade advisor if you consider XP (can be done online from the MS website).
W2K is at the end of it's life cycle and support will soon be ending.
Now if you are just curious and want to run it for gaining experience in working
with professional end of the NT type systems to start, it will be a worth while endeavor
and will be a better choice for older, slower hardware. Don't be surprised if it
doesn't support all of the hardware though. XP has more hardware support than does
W2K in my experience.

As has been stated, a "clean" install is your best option. If there are any troubles
or issues with your ME install (and I would be surprised if there weren't....very
few people were able to get ME to perform in an even remotely 'stable' fashion) they
would be carried over with an upgrade. Backup all important data, wipe the drive
and install 2000 from scratch. You'll be happy you did! If you're a gamer, I
can tell you for certain that 2000 is not a good gaming platform. I ran it for quite
a while when it first came out but had trouble with many different games. That's
why I switched to XP when it was released. It (XP) works fine with every game I've
installed. If however, gaming is not an issue with you, then I'm positive you will
find it a stable, reliable environment to work in.

Just to add to the other post.
You didn't say if your old computer was a desktop or a laptop ,if it's a laptop you
may just want to forget the upgrade to a new OS,,with a clean install...
If not you are in for alot of work if it's desktop it should be duck soup to do a
CLEAN install of win2k..
Laptops have very proprietary hardware and software.
