Hang on every other reboot

I have a Dell computer running Windows 2000 Professional that hangs every other time I boot/reboot. When it does hang, it does so after I have logged in and the system has checked network connections, but before it loads the Windows desktop. Even then, I can move the cursor around and use cntrl-alt-del to bring up the task manager or shut-down options.

On a boot/reboot that normally hangs (like I said, it happens exactly every other time), if I first enter safe mode, the system will boot. However, the next time I try to boot normally it will hang. I used the boot log option to see what was happening on the two different scenarios (freeze or no-freeze). The first 495 lines of both logs are exactly the same, beginning with "Service Pack 4 3 5 'time'" and ending with "Loaded Driver\??\C:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\SAVRT.sys"

On the no-freeze log, there are an additional 123 lines. But the first 41 of these extra 123 lines duplicate the first 41 lines in the log. Any ideas on how to fix this or where to look for solutions would be greatly appreciated.
