Reloading

Two queries really. 1. I have reloaded W2k in the past to clear growing problems
and uncertainties. This means now downloading updates to SP4 and since ? Maybe they
are still available, but is there a way to save all the presently loaded updates,
in a clean form? 2. I also wonder, did anyone ever write a "Top Hat" package
for W2k to give the best reload possible or add any facility in Xp worth having?
To perpetuate W2k, I suppose. I'm "told" these tophats exist for various basic versions
of Linux and wonder if there is a parallel for those needing low cost Windows

Using Windows update won't save updates in a useable form later. Go here to download
them for standalone/IT admin install purposes:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/downloads/win2k.mspx
so you don't have to use Windows update. They can be slipstreamed into a new install
CD if you know how to do it. Instructions are all over the net, but it does take
time and can be a pain (so most of us do the process below).
You can also do what most of us do, and that is to image a clean install with all
of the current updates and whatever software we want, into a new drive image (stored
either on a CD/DVD or better yet, another HDD) when you do have to reinstall.
Top hat for W2K? Not that I have seen as there are still security updates being
applied, but would be interested to know about if it has been done by someone. W2K
isn't open source software, but a roll-up package was done by someone a while ago
for Win 9X, just not sanctioned by MS and you use it at your own risk...

Saw a Download at MajorGeeks.com, called Microsoft Windows 2000 Unofficial SP 5.1.,
which seems to cover it

Thanks Steve! If others are interested it was download No.931, 231Mb. Not yet sure
how it would be loaded on to a new raw W2k CD installation, but will see what the
27 files look like, maybe some readme advice hidden there?

Thanks C. K. for your input. Your terminology is ahead of me, but let me say how
I tried to read it. I could plug in my old clean 6G HDD as replacement HD
'0' and run the W2k CD as usual, then adding all the updates/rollups to be found,
having saved them, virus scanned, to CD previously. Having then this CD,
I'm not sure how the updated W2k O/S there would be transferred to a cleaned 80G
HD from the original PC? You will appreciate the limits to my knowledge!
Any ideas or related web sites?
