Print subsystem unavailable in Windows 2000. Spooler service won't stay running.

I am running Windows 2000 SP4. Earlier this week I tried to install a new HP CP3503
network printer. Something happened and now I have no printers at all (even though
they are all still listed in the registry in the correct place). When I try to add
a new printer I get the error that the system is out of resources and "Printer operation
cannot continue due to lack of resources. The print subsystem is unavailable".
The print spooler is not started but going to services and restarting it does nothing.
Now I not print and can not add any printers and have no printers in the list.
It does not matter what profile I log in under. I tried copying spooler files from
the Windows 2000 CD to C:\Winnt\system32 but that makes no difference. Short of
upgrading to XP how can I fix this without destroying the existing system?

What printers were previously installed?? If you had a Lexmark, there is an issue
with their software and you will have to do some cleaning I believe. Just one possible
problem that I have seen and has been posted on the forum....

I had no Lexmark printers installed. Most of them were either local HP printers
or network HP printers with the exception of Adobe Distiller and an Imagistics 2520.
The broken spooler problem arose when I tried to set up a new HP CP3505 color printer.
Now I am unable to correct it. I would try to repair Windows 2000 but I do not
know which version was used to originally make this system. It is currently at Windows
2000 SP4 but was not originally built with SP4.
