Reload W2k Again-----

Dex's comment on "Reload" led me to a clean copy of my Drivers CD. W2k re-re-instal then ran OK. Loaded SP3 & 4, AVG, Zonealram, B/band Modem then IE6. All OK. AVG scan fine. ie STAGE 1 complete Then hit by 65 Windows updates to download and instal. took hours at 5Mbs! At the end, after restart all hell let loose. Icons on d/top would open, not drag. The modem and Zonealarm could not be accessed. opened Programs and found a blank page, add/remove programs blank, and so on. No virus, but RegCure found 447 errors, treatment did not help. A total pig's breakfast, ---with apologies to pigs. Now back at STAGE 1 again all OK. Found SP4 v2. Is there an update of SP4 v2? Anymore ways to void 65 updates? I did discover Unofficial SP5.1, but could not run it. Need to make a special CD I think--a bit beyond me. Any ideas welcome!

"Anymore ways to void 65 updates?"

Yes. Go to Settings > Control Panel > Automatic Updates and remove the check beside Keep My Computer Up TO Date.

I think ?? Grace is talking about a clean reload of W2k, not daily updates. The mass of updates at reload look like eventually ending the use of W2k SP2 CDs to reload. Sp4 v2 is only about 30MB and its cut off date is unknown? Softpedia has a SP5.1 which auto opens, I bellieve but not yet tried, although some 200MB in size, When it starts and finishes in time I cannot guess .I would also like to hear from any expert who knows, as it may help Grace and the rest of us one day?

One you only need sp4, it has all previous sp. Next zonealarm is known to conflict with other programs. You do need all the updates, it is to protect your computer. Be carefully in what you use as a registry cleaner, some can do more harm than good. Yes there is an update of SP4 v2. It should have been of of the 65 updates. Do not try updates from any other place than Microsoft, it would not be safe. I hope this helps a little.
