Driver Conversion, WinXP to W2K, AMD Radeon

Once before, I had a newer video card than I could get a driver for under Win2000,
and sorted that out right away. This time, I'm not having such good luck. I know
there are both conversion utilities and some libraries with already- converted drivers,
but I'm not having much luck from either Google or Yahoo.
It's an HD 3***, so I need to convert an 8.x driver. Gewg, as the fount of all W2K
knowledge here, have you got anything for me today? (Please?)

I have only observed Gewg_ post to the Win 98 forum. He mentioned sometime back
that he didn't have use for W2K or XP if I can recall correctly... Come to think
of it, I don't recall him posting to the ME forum either. Could be wrong though..
I'm not here that often anymore..
As for the drivers, some can be converted/modified or rewritten, some can't depending
on newer hardware design. Forums for video devices or maybe Tom's Hardware may be
of better assisitance..

I'm *NOT* that old! I swear! Sorry, Gewg, I'll dredge my suffering memory more thoroughly.
Of course, (addressing my earlier self) it's DEX!
C. K., I left a subscribed query at the Rage 3D forums, where a conversion tool was
described, but it's unfamiliar. Whatever I did to get an HD 2400 working with W2K
a year and a half ago was different, and I should've left myself a record.

Sometimes, when they have their thinking caps on, or if they are feeling a financial
pinch, my relatives ask me to assemble a custom PC for them. I think, no matter
how I describe my DIY results, a few are less impressed than if it had a real brand
name.
When the HD 2400 Pro was still very new, I used it as the compromise part, when for
myself I would have preferred the X1650 Pro for only a couple of dollars more. That
nephew wanted "all the newest" at "the cheapest cost", using the same OS he's been
using (W2K), and never has been one to listen to advice. He's had no complaints
I've heard of since he got what he specified.
Now I have assembled a newer PC for his sister to use, although she does listen,
whether she absorbs much of it or not. It has an HD 3650 right now, and she doesn't
care what OS I put on it (so it will probably get XP), but I want to use an HD 3850
with Win2K in the dual boot on one of my own (no Win98se any more for the very latest
hardware).
ATI stopped offering drivers for the last two VGA generations that would install
to Windows2000. The small program that is supposed to convert a regular driver is
being balky, and I will look at what Driver Guide has, of course, although I would've
sworn, right up to arriving there, that the Rage 3D site was where I'd found a preconverted
7.x driver for my nephew's VGA.

Driver Guide was a dead end. They aren't getting much in the way of current drivers
lately, it seems.

Just as an FYI update, I did find an Omega driver that did not object to Win2000,
but can't be used anyway because of the screen resolution. W2K refuses to offer
better than 640 by 480 (though it claims it will, but doesn't follow up on the promise).
The various action buttons in the Omega versions of ATI's drivers have no text on
them, just loose patterns of dots in neat rows.
The author of the Conversion tool replied, and said it is working for him with ATI's
8.x drivers, and so far he couldn't explain why it wouldn't work for me.

Ahhh.. What revision card does he have, and what other cards and drivers does he
have installed? I guess it depends on how much time you want to spend but you could
eventually find out why his drivers won't work. Anything from slight hardware differences
to installed software and drivers (or a combination of the two) could be the issue.
Take a look in system info for memory address or other conlicts just out of curiosity.

re: Driver Conversion, WinXP to W2K, AMD Radeon (Omega!)

Two things I hadn't done in quite the order as before I ended up trying were the
key. I discovered that the base 640 by 480 PCI driver in W2K had two varieties --
the one in Safe Mode is better. The Omega drivers' install screens were understandable
that way.
That particular Omega still stopped short of finishing its driver install, perhaps
because I used Safe Mode, but all files were in place. I could open the Device Manager
and go to the VGA device, and in there, point at the correct driver. If I had used
the "normal" PCI VGA default, I had written down a "script" for the action buttons
on the screens from the Omega driver set.
I'd looked through each currently connected PC's drivers (there are usually 3 PCs
of my own, sometimes more), and the oldest of them did have relatively old Radeon
drivers for W2K, so I installed the Omega ones on it and recorded all the steps.
(I ended up not needing my script after all, but it was a good idea, and was suggested
by a member at AnandTech).
Thanks to everyone here who contributed!
