An asf file was received by Yahoo email and downloaded to desktop where it was seen in Properties as a Windows Media Audio/Video file and it played, in a W2K SP4 O/S, MP9. The file was mailed to another W2k SP4 user on Yahoo mail where it would not download, only open Media Player, but not play. It reported an Media Player Error but non specific. Media Player 9 was reloaded but the error page reappeared. To check it it, Media Player was used to open audio files, all previously played. Three in four folders of audio files played OK. The content of one only opened into Media Player home page, but did not play. The email carrying the asf file was forwarded back to the originator, where it did download and open OK s before. As the originator, what can I try to help fix the recipient's system?

ASF can stand for:
In computing:
    * Advanced Systems Format (formerly "Advanced Streaming Format", .asf), a Microsoft streaming format associated with Windows Media Player.

I would recommend another format.

It seems no version of  Windows  has a built-in program to convert ASF to a more flexible format. Here are some of many free third-parth programs that may help.

Free asf to mp3 downloads
