Depends on what the compression utility was that compressed them.  If the NTFS file 
system under Windows, put thje drive into a machine running the same Windows operating 
system, or install Windows on a spare HDD for instance and add the HDD as a slave 
or a second drive, take possession of the files and see if you can decompress them. 
 Otherwise we can't really answer your question beyond that without more info..
