USB Driver Problem

Hi Everyone,
I have an older Thinkpad T20 running Windows 2000 that has only one USB port. Recently
the C: drive went out, so I installed a new replacement drive and began downloading
all the upgrades. The USB connection worked fine until I installed SP4 for W2K,
then it quit working. Device Manager says "The drivers for this device are not
installed (Code 28)", but when I run the Driver Update Wizard, it gives me an error
message that says "The installation failed because a function driver was not specified
for this device instance". I checked on the Internet and found that several other
people experienced the same problem with W2K, but none of their various solutions
seem to work for me.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks,
rjoeng

It would be helpful if you listed the various solutions you have tried, so we don't
go over the same ground.

Remove the the SP4,, then it should come, reboot with the win2k cd then run the setup
command and then run the repair item that will pop up at that point ..

Hi jaf. Thanks for your reply. Well, at first I tried uninstalling the USB host
controllers with Device Manager, then rebooting and letting the New Hardware Wizard
do its job - but that didn't work. I checked in BIOS, but there seems to be nothing
specific mentioned in there about the USB. Then I used regedit, located HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor,
and double-clicked on Start in the right pane to check the Value data box. It had
number 3 in it, as it is supposed to. The only thing I have not done yet is uninstall
SP4 and reboot off the W2K disk. Any suggestions?

Hi geek9pm. I did use this site quite extensively after I installed the new C: drive.
I even downloaded the USB driver from this site, but when I tried to install it
I got the same error message about "Function Driver Not Specified".
