Installing Xp s/ware on W2k?

New photo s/ware would not install on W2k. Took it to an XpPC and installed it to
a USB memory stick. An icon appeared on the Xp D/top and it ran OK. Brought back
the USB stick and launch Icon to my W2kPC. It did not run, indicating a fault and
need for re-installation. Did I leave some critical component on the XpPC? if so,
what and where?? Otherwise had expected W2k and Xp to be "similar" ????
