PC Freezes when moving files

For a week now I have had the problem of the PC frezzes when I either copy or move files from 1 partition to another. The cpu goes up to 100% while moving or copying the file and stays that way until it freezes. Everything else appears to run normally including watching a video or converting a file. etc. Any ideas on what might be causing this? Thanks

Just a followup it appears to happen when transfering files between Sata drives but not IDE drives. Thanks

Moving large amounts of files in Windows can invite problems. One thing that helps is to do it is smaller groups at a time. Also, using Copy rather than Move avoids some problems with files that are read-only or system files or files that must be kept with the partition. Then after the copy has finished, delete the files that can be deleted.

I wish it was that easy. The work around I can do is to move files from the Sata disk onto an IDE disk and then move them onto the other Sata disk. The Sata disks are treated as Plug n Play. Is that how they suposed to be?

Hi Jacob6601 No my motherboard has sata connections which I use. I have had quite a few " Kernel Stack Inpage Errors". Searched the net and found that I will need to check my cables and maybe replace them. 1 hard drive maybe on its way out, but won't know for sure until I take things apart.

Try the cables and chkdsk /r first. Other things to try:

1. Move your swap file to a different drive (preferably to the other channel).
2. Disable all ACPI (power saving) functions (bios and win).
3. Resource conflicts. Failing RAM.
4. Some forums suggest "Disable "System caching" in BIOS", but I don't see how that
would be a cause. Simple enough to check, though.
