It sounds like you may have a corrupt drive, or one that is going bad. That would be the first thing I would check for. The hard drive or heat (check the fans) would be the first suspects. Boot from floppy/cd and try some copy operations (not to the hd) to check for heat problems (after a visual inspection). After that, look at the memory.
