ICS not going through because LAN isn't connected?

This is a difficult issue to phrase on the subject line and I'm Windows 2000 illiterate, still there? Great, hope you can help!

I'm visiting family in Colorado and the 'entire' house is wireless, as in the modem and router are not connected to any of the computers. I'm trying to set up ICS from a laptop running 2000 that's receiving internet via a Netgear WiFi card and have it share to an X Box 360 via an Ethernet cable.

Unfortunately, whenever I go into LAC 2-which is the connection I'm receiving the internet from- and click yes after checking "Enable ICS for this connection" I get a prompt telling saying:

"When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set up to use IP address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on your network. If these other computers have static IP addresses, you should set them to obtain their IP addresses automatically. Are you sure you want to enable ICS?"

After clicking yes, and wait, within seconds I get an error message stating:

"An error occurred while ICS was being enabled.

ICS cannot be enabled. The LAN connection selected as the private network is either not present, or is disconnected from the network. Please ensure that the LAN adapter is connected before enabling ICS."

Now the thing is, my uncle doesn't want me messing with hardware too much because if I mess it up he'll have to pay someone to fix my mess, understandable, right?

My question is, does there have to be a solid LAN connection-even if only at first to set it up-to enable ICS if I plan on receiving a WiFi signal only to share it downstream to an X Box 360 via Ethernet cable?

Also, this is the only available option I have at my disposal, he doesn't want cables running through the house and I prefer it to spending 100 bucks on Microsoft's proprietary 360 WiFi adapter. Note: I've used this method of getting online before, but with an Apple laptop instead.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, thank you. Also, here are some minor details

-I tried setting up LAC 1 to share with the assumption that LAC 2 pick up the connection and LAC 1 would transfer it over, that at least let me click yes without an error, except it completely disconnected me from the internet.

-I've tried this with the console plugged in and on and while being completely disconnected,

-My ipconfig says: Ethernet adapter LAC 2: IP: 192.168.1.2 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Def: 192.168.1.1 Ethernet adapter LAC (LAC 1 assume): Media State: Cable Disconnected

If you guys need anymore info short of credit card info and rights to my soul I'd be more than happy to oblige, thanks again!

"When Internet Connection Sharing is enabled, your LAN adapter will be set up to use IP address 192.168.0.1. Your computer may lose connectivity with other computers on your network. This a problem with Windows 2000. An you do not want to mess with the router, There is a practical solution. This subject has come up before. There is a software solution to this. I am a little slow, I will have to go search this forum for the information on how to do a "bridge" in Windows 2000. It is in here somewhere. "LAN bridge" is what I will look for.

Using Ethernet Bridge 2.0 for Windows 2000
This is a small utility (driver and GUI configuration tool) for MAC level bridging TCPIP bound network interfaces (based on NDIS-hooking technology for Windows 2000/XP/2003). It can be used, an example, with OpenVPN in its bridging mode, especially with the server-end running on a Windows 2000

Read the article over. This is a quick easy way to overcome the problem with the IP address Windows 2000 always wants to use for ICS.
I believe this is the utility I found. You can to start every time you boot you windows 2000 computer. It is a ZIP file. so you will need a free unzip program. Lots of those around.Google unzip.

Hey, thank you for the software. Maybe you can help me with another issue on the X Box side.

When testing internet connection there are 3 steps Xbox 360-Network Network-Internet Internet-FUN! LOL

Well, for some reason, when I test the connection, I get an error on the first step, how can I tell if it's seeing the laptop as a now-shared connection or if it's just a busted ethernet cable?

I look online and found that it IS in fact an ethernet, no crossover, but on it it says Cat .5 (not sure if there should be a space there) is it Cat 5 or less than Cat 1? Would that even affect its not seeing a connection, or would it just limit my connection assuming it was working in the first place?

Any ideas to get me started would help a lot, and again thanks for the previous help.

Also if you're familiar with the 360's manual network configuration settings, what would I want these settings to be relative to the laptop (which it's now directly connected to) or the router (which it's connected to through the laptop's forced ICS, which in turn is connected via WiFi)?

IP Address Subnet Mask Gateway

and do I mess with DNS settings, PPPoE Settings, or Advanced Settings which includes host name and Alt. MAC address?

Whoa. That is a long list of questions.
The crossover cable is needed to hook two Windows PCs together when a a Bridge or ICS is being used. That should also apply to the X-box. You should use a ethernet crossover cable. The term 'CAT-5' refers to the quality of the canle. Even CAT-3 work for a short distance. The question is the connection. The croserve has one A connection and one B connetion.
If that bit of software was of some help, I am glad it did help. Here on the forum we do things the have to do with Windows 2000 problems.
The X-Box has its own set of issues that I can not help with here.
