Most likely it was a Windows NT PC.
Here is a quote.
The IBM NetVista is a variety of products manufactured by IBM.
The IBM NetVista personal computer was the follow-on to the IBM PC Series. It was
announced in May 2000, and withdrawn in May 2004. It was replaced by the IBM ThinkCentre
(now Lenovo ThinkCentre since 2005).

If it could be upgraded to Windows 2000 it would be useful as a spare PC for general
use.

If the college did not include a copy of a CD with the OS (any OS, whether it is
W2K or Windows98) on it, he will have to buy one. A clean reinstall seems in order
now.
