computer probably dead

my wife's old IBM desktop (perhaps 8 to 10 or so yrs old) was working fine until
thurs nite. everything is plugged in ok, nothing was moved, etc. when i press the
button on the pc to try to get it going, there's a tiny noise - and nothing. many
additional attempts have proved fruitless. anything else i can try, or just chalk
it up to the computer died and its time to get a new one? There were storms in the
area Thurs and maybe that did it - although another computer (also old but not as
old) in the house was left on and is fine - both have surge protectors. Thanks.

Probably not worth fixing, unless you can for free.

Hi ernie
It's time to replace it :(
The HD is dead, but it can be many things,a new HD is cheap about 40 to 50 bucks but
it's software that will drive you nuts ( IBM software ) you can find it on eBay for
about 20.oo bucks but you will end up with a 10 year old computer ,find a good use
one on eBay for 50.oo bucks or less and use the old one for parts, battery, etc.
If you love the PC :)

Might be the power supply, recently had to replace one on our HP that is almost that
old, it was on a surge protector as well. If it uses a standard ATX power supply
you can get one for a very minimal price, if it an IBM proprietary one the cost is
likely going to be more than it is worth.
