Shockwave Flash

I just installed the latest Shockwave Flash. It is "unsupported" for Win2K. That is, this is the XP version. It installs once you override the warning. It runs but there may be stability problems or something.

I tested it at an Adobe site which merely confirmed that it was installed.

Does anyone have any links that could give me a decent demonstration?

Does anyone know specific incidents of fails with the new Shockwave Flash?

I should add that I installed it right after upgrading Firefox to 3.54 today. I have Internet Explorer blocked by my firewall and since there are no further updates to be had for Win2K I don't have any reason to use IE at all.

If you use windows then you need I.E for updates from Microsoft. You cannot do this with Firefox.

Many things wrong with that.

One is that I don't need IE updates. As I stated, I don't use IE. As I stated, I have it so my firewall blocks it.

Another is that Msft has no intention of removing the vulnerabilities of IE. The updates are meaningless. Indeed, they did the opposite earlier this year and hacked Firefox to put a security hole in it. They installed an invisible plug-in so it would accept the driveby installations of ActiveX. Removal could not be done by the Firefox procedures but by working with the registry.

Another is that something happened to my IE installation with 5.5 and while it functions it refuses to update to 6. It gives an update is already in progress.

Another is that Msft no longer supports Win2K. The last time they had an update for that they said would apply to Win2K, I had to go to a WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) page that rejects Win2K.

The last point is that the subject here is Shockwave Flash.

Thank you.

I've partially worked on my problem but Googling "shockwave flash" and ignoring all the leading entries and jumping to some page way down in priority. I was hoping for a page with a use of it that would be quick to load. That is, some relatively simple animations and work up from that. So far the most promising is www.mapsofwar.com which has various maps showing the surge and shrinkage of empires and religions.

I'll report back on my results. However that, if anyone has tips on Shockwave sites for testing this or have already done what I have, I would appreciate it.

The update packages for unsupported versions of Windows can be found at

They once were shut down, probably by Msft, but are back. They are, in effect, a Windows fan site. They had (and still do) Win98 updates and mods and have added all (I think) the updates for Win2K. These are in a format that they must be downloaded and run. They do not install directly. So they can be downloaded by Firefox or, preferably, a download manager. There is no need to use IE to get them.

Here, I just found another:

Okay, I tried it and it worked fine for these:

The location for the recent Shockwave player is: Under the drop down box "Select an installer type" you must select "Slim"; the "Full" version will not run under Win2K.

It will put Shockwave_Installer_Slim.exe into your download directory.

It seems that a lack of support by third party software vendors determines whether
an OS is still useable or not.

I don't think that is quite right. My understanding is that there will be updates
well into 2010 unless Microsoft announced they will cut off support early.

I don't go to the WGA page out of principle. If you know the file name you can usually
track it down by googling for it.

ERPman is a good place to look for updates. I read the security bulletins, download
the updates, and archive them to keep them on hand.
