What can I do to speed up my internet?

I'm running Win 2K SP4 2Gb RAM and Roadrunner 10Mbps internet. I can't get more than
3Mbps on Firefox or Explorer.
Can anyone help me with this? I just had the TWC guy here and he's getting 20Mbps
from the same modem.
This is disturbing.
Thanks, Rick

What's your antivirus? Antispyware? Are they working too hard?
Do you have overlapping security?
Or has your security failed and your computer has become a zombie (bot).
Tho I don't think it's your problem I've found some really slow sites. The pages
had fully loaded (or almost so) and data was flowing, but it took a long time to
stop. One site produced a status bar message "Waiting for Digg.com". I don't care
about Digg and never will. (Well, if someone wanted to pay me, then I'd jump on
the bandwagon.) I used Adblock Plus, not to block an ad agency but so Digg would
not waste my time again.
I added Ghostery for no particular reason. It selectively blocks software that calls
back somewhere to gather marketing info. Most of these people have Privacy Policies
that they only use them for mass statistics. Then one of my favorite sites added
a new message warning me that, duh, something was going too slowly. This happened
on every page. Then I tried using Ghostery to block any companies' traces.
Things speeded up. In effect these programs -- all legitimate commercial products
-- are bots slowing your computer as hackers' trojans do.

Most of the problems I have are with facebook apps.
I'm running AVG Internet Security Suite and nothing else. They finally got back to
me and asked me to do a few things, but I think it's the program itself. When I disabled
the link scanner, I got up to 10+ Mbps.
I don't know if the link scanner is all that useful as I haven't talked with anyone
that know anything about it, but if it's part of the security suite, I'd like to
be able to use it.
I can't wait to finish building my new computer and use XP pro (for however long
that lasts). At least I'll be able to pick faster AV services.
Thanks for the help and I hope you (or someone else) can help me more :-)
I'll check out Ghostery and see what that's all about. If it helps, I will post again.

Should ask the ISP if they have a speed test and tweaking information. If not, check
out www.broadbandreports.com.. They have speed tests and tweaking information.
Any ISP worth their weight should have tools to check your speed and have advice
on tweaking your machine for high speed connections.
For instance, I went from 3/1.5 meg DSL, to 25/25 on Verizon FIOS. I run both W2K
and XP. Verizon has a speed test and a utility that checks your machine for proper
settings to enable the full speed of your connection. Before applying the tweaks,
I couldn't get more then 7 meg down on any machine. After the tweak utility, I could
get 24 down, 25 up. Broadband reports came up with the same speed at night, less
in the daytime.
Just one thing to check also..
Out of the box, neither operating system was designed for the speeds of the internet
connection today and need to be tweaked despite what MS says.
