This depends on the program....generally speaking though, most software comes
with some sort of 'preference' settings. Check the program options out and look
for a checkbox or radio button that has "show icon in systray" and deselect it.
Some programs you can't disable without stopping them entirely from starting up.
As for windows 2000 services, none of them really show up in the systray and can
be controlled from the 'services' icon in Administrative Tools folder.

If you just want them disabled for your present session, right click on the icon
in the system tray and click exit or disable.
To permanently remove them, you may have to try a few different things. First, look
in the StartUp folder -- many times you can delete the shortcut from there.
Second, get a copy of a Windows 98 utility called msconfig.exe. It's in the windows
or windows\system directory. Once you run it in Windows 2000, it will give you several
errors, such as it can't find the autoexec.bat or the config.sys files -- just ignore
and click through the errors. It will then give you a list of programs that are
started when Windows 2000 boots. You can check or uncheck programs you don't want
started during boot up.
Finally, you can disable some programs by going to the start/programs/administrative
tools folder and running Services. You can change a service from starting automatically
to starting manually.

Save yourself the trouble of dragging msconfig over from a 98 box. If you open
the registry and drill down to: HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run you
will find the settings for programs that start on bootup.

Agreed, this an easy to use tool that I think most should be able to figure out.
If you are, however, interested in msconfig.exe that works with win2k, try the xp
version. you can download here: http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm

Oh yeah. This little tool works GREAT! Got rid of an item in my systray that was
really hard to track down. Cool and very easy. Thanks.

This still did not answer the question. How do you add an icon to the system tray?

To remove the icons from the system tray you need to have the run the 'msconfig'
option . In there from the StartUp tab it is possible to check or uncheck the required
icons. If you don't have the msconfig option in the system using Windows 2000 or
XP, you need tom copy msconfig .exe from the Win98 CD to the root folder

You can use MSConfig Cleanup to remove the disabled items from MSConfig. It is free.
The address is http://www.get-in-control.com/msconfig-cleanup/
