Question about 'Customize Your Keyboard Mapping'
Tuesday, August 21, 2001 at 5:17 am Posted by Ken Collins
(2 messages posted)
I have a question about Customize
Your Keyboard Mapping:
Does anyone know a way to completely disable the CAPS LOCK and INSERT keys? I
never use these keys, except by accident. The INSERT key is especially important
to disable. It's easy to sideswipe it by mistake when you're aiming for the BACKSPACE
key, and I usually don't discover that I'm in type-over mode until after I've obliterated
a couple of sentences.

Hi Ken,
look here:

This article describes how to create MS-DOS-based programs to toggle the CAPS LOCK
and NUM LOCK keys on and off.

I too, would like to obtain a solution to the problem of Caps Lock! I know of nothing
more irritating than this.
I did download the Keyboard Remap program mentioned, but after "installing" I can't
find the program or how to use it.
Any information?

You could use the low tech solution I've been using for years ... remove the Caps
Lock key and put it in your drawer (in case you want to give the keyboard away sometime
in the future). Once done, I always put a piece of Scotch tape over the socket to
keep dust out. Sadly, my latest keyboard has a spring that sticks out. Hence I am
following this thread in search of a more high-tech solution :)

I found a free Windows program that disables the #@)(*%! caps lock key. Here's the

It seems to work fine on Windows 2000. Tip of the hat to David Bleckmann for writing
this.

Ray - The Remap program creates a new tab in the keyboard control panel, which allows
you to swap around the caps lock, left and/or right shift and/or alt, windows, and
menu keys

Does this apply to Windows 2000 Professional?
I did the "remap" run, found the "swap tab" and equated CapsLock to Left Shift.
But it seems to have no effect. Things are just as they were before.
Do I need to remap other keys as well? The options for the left side remapping are
Shift, CapsLock, Ctl, and Alt. I use these keys all the time and I'd prefer to not
make one of them the CapsLock. Is that the answer?
I'd just like to eliminate the CapsLock key!

neat, but is there anything that works in win2k that swaps the ctrl and alt keys?
I am a long-time Mac user and am constantly hitting alt which is where the cmd key
is on a Mac. plus the ctrl key is in a really awkward position. whose idea was that?
dumb...

re: Question about 'Customize Your Keyboard Mapping'

The following works in XP, should work in win2k as well:
----------------------------------------------------------
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout];
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,05,00,00,00,1D,00,38,00,38,00,1D,00,1D,E0,38,E0,38,E0,1D,E0,00,00,00,00
----------------------------------------------------------
Copy this to a text file and save it as "swapkeys.reg".
Doubleclick to open it and confirm that you want to
insert the contents in your registry.
Reboot, and your Ctrl and Alt keys will be swapped.
The idea is to create a "Scancode Map" key in
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout".
This should contain a series of hex codes on which keys to exchange
(boy, do I ever miss the key remap program in the Win95 kernel toys.
Or even Xmodmap under Unix!).
Details of how this works can be found at
http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,65157,pg,3,00.asp
and
http://www.microsoft.com/hwdev/tech/input/w2kscan-map.asp
The above article notes the shortcomings of this method:
it applies to all users and all keyboards and requires rebooting.
I'd appreciate information on a more elegant freeware or shareware solution.
A caveat with regard to the above registry hack: it swaps Ctrl and Alt,
but the distinction between right and left Ctrl and Alt is lost
(specifically, the lefthand Ctrl and Alt are recognized as
the righthand Crlt and Alt).
Usually no problem except perhaps for some games.
Suggestions are of course welcome.
Hope this helps,

Does anyone know a way to completely disable the CAPS LOCK and INSERT
keys?
I found the following registry entry works on Windows 2000, for disabling the CAPS
LOCK key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,1d,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00
This remaps the CAPS LOCK to LEFT CTRL. If you wanted the key to be "dead", i.e.
do nothing, you could give the code 00003a00 instead of 1d003a00.
In order to modify the INSERT key, you would need to the scancode for it. Offhand,
I don't know what it is.
A reboot is required for these changes to take effect.
I prefer this solution because there is no process left running in memory constantly...

The CAPSLOCK key has bugged me for ages.
It can be disabled with some minor registry adjustments.
Check http://winadmin.sourceforge.net/wanocaps.html
for instructions how to do it.
It's basically executing a .reg file and rebooting.

Thank you, the information was very helpfull. Now I just wish I can do something
similar in Win98 (which I use at home). I loaded the kernel tools, but it only works
half-way: it only allows me to remap the right Win key to the Ctrl key and even when
I do that it actually remaps the left Win key to the left Ctrl key.
I hate the Win keys and all I want to do is to remap the Win keys on both sides of
the keyboard to their respective Ctrl keys.

John, you posted this over two years back, but thank!
My laptop cntrl key went dead (over use). It was to be a big job to repair the keyboard
membrane and expensive. Instead I've swapped cap lock and cntrl using your code.
I've swapped key tops too and i'm back on the road.
Cheers!
