Persistent Demand Dial VPN occasionally stops responding

I setup a demand dial VPN connection (over TCP/IP) through RRAS in Win2K3 to connect
to our Win2K3 VPN Server.

It was initially set as a Persistent connection; however, I have found that after
being connected (probably idle) for a few hours (not sure exactly how long), the
connection will stop responding - I can't even ping machines over the VPN, even though
the VPN connection is enabled/connected.

If I disconnect and re-dial, everything seems to work. Since I'd rather not have
to manually do this, I set it up to disconnect if idle for 5 minutes, and auto-redial
when needed. This is not ideal because, if the connection is idle for more than
5 minutes, the machine is not remotely accessible until someone on the inside uses
the connection.

Does anyone have an idea why the persistent connection stops responding and how to
fix this?
