Accounts: two not equivalent ways to write them

On a 2003 server there are some services. I didn't configure the server myself and noticed that some of these services run as a domain user who is local administrators too. The domain account is written in two different ways: account@domain.local or domain.local\account and it seems there are some differences in the behaviour. Can anyone explain why the two ways to write the same account are not equivalent ? Thank you Filippo
