Erik was close but he didn't tell you all the things you'd have to do. For instance,
you would have to copy the GC (global catalog) over to the second server. There
are other steps to performing a migration this way you need to know about (like moving
the FSMO roles) which is why I recommended researching the info at Microsoft (sorry,
no magic pill........as much as we might all wish there were). A backup, including
the system state, is a VERY good idea prior to doing anything. This way, worst comes
to worst, you can return the server to the state it was prior to the migration.
However, a system state backup won't backup user data....those folders/files have
to be added to the backup set. Between DC's, replication is automatic. However,
that's the Active Directory information and not user data. The user data will have
to be either copied over manually or with a migration tool. For migration tools,
check the 2003 Resource Kit on MS's web site. You can either order the RK CD, or
download individual tools directly from their site. Just a note, I haven't done
a migration like this myself so bare that in mind and read over all the migration
info throroughly. With a bit of luck, someone with experience with this type of
migration will answer also. I just know the basic steps from training (ie: copy
of GC, move FSMO roles) but there may be more and I would hate it if you took only
my advice and it messed up on you.
