rejoining a domain

I've a windows 2003 domain with clients running XP pro.
one of the clients broke down and was sent to repair. I'm now trying to add a new
PC as the existing domain member (instead of the one the was sent to repair). I've
set it's IP the same as the old one, and have set it's name as the old one.
now when I try to login I get an error message saying the trust relationship to the
domain has failed (1789)
