2003 Word saves docs as JAR & Wordpad

I have a new computer with XP and Word 2003. When I save a document in Word, the
icon is one I have identified as associated with a JAR file (a piece of paper with
a red A on it). When I go to Folder Options/File Types, the standard Microsoft Word
Document file type and extension aren't there to choose from. Where did they go &
how can I change the icon to the little W icon?
Also, why does a Word document attachment open in Wordpad if I try to open it directly
from my mail server? I have to close it, go into Word, and then open it to get it
to open as a Word doc. Neither of these things happened with old computer.
