validating product key before I buy

I am looking to purchase Windows 2000 Server SW from a seller. He has a disk and
he has a product key. He is willing and has shared the key code. The seller is
not local. I need to know how to verify that the key code is valid before moving
forward with the purchase. I am not very well versed in these things so any help
is much appreciated. Thanks!
