Powering down the system

Greetings all,
I got in this morning and got an email from one of our systems users indicating that
the system is down.
I went to the server and found a command prompt asking for password.
I entered what I thought was the password 3 times but then I got this warning:
"Halt! after 3 failed attempts, you must power down"
yet there is a note on the screen that says, "Do not power off" of pull off power"
Can you suggest to me what to do next, please?
