to test your theory, and if you have administrator privileges on the local PC.. You
can use the C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file to add specific entries to
the DFS shares that point to the right IP address.
In other words.. Put an entry in for contoso.com that points to the local IP address
of where the share is stored. This will force windows to ignore DNS and use that
IP address.
See if your start menu problems, disappear.
