If you are trying to recover a deleted file from a drive, it certainly shouldn't be mounted or be in use. The proper way to do this is to plug the drive into a different PC as a slave and let the software run to recover the data. The more you use the drive the more chance you have of overwriting the data and making it unrecoverable. Specifically, what program are you trying to use to recover the data?
