Hi Ed.. I somewhat suspect that something is "accessing" the screen or updating the screen in such a way that it is causing all this stuff to disappear on you. If you have it setup to hide inactive icons on the taskbar, do they also give you trouble appearing? Have you tried disabling all un-necessary services and software temporarily with msconfig? This might narrow it down for you. In case you need the information, you can click start -> run -> type 'msconfig', click the 'services' tab, select "hide all microsoft services", click 'disable all', click the 'startup' tab, click 'disable all,' click 'OK' and reboot.
