RDP - Interrupted connection, lost all work

Occasionally the connection to the server is temporarily disrupted when connecting
to a VPN (i.e. lost packets)
When this happens, the entire user account is magically reset, losing all work in
progress and shutting down all open programs.
Is there a way to avoid this?
Note: I am NOT referring to a disconnected user (where you click X and close the
login window without properly logging out). In such instances, the users work is
retained and can be resumed at the next log in (unless a timelimit has been set by
an administrator).
