You're on the right track.
Before you do anything, write down all the settings on paper just in case.
Try changing the key first using the activation method.
It may not take the new key because of the version differences.
The repair option would be the next step. Your settings should still be in place 
but the rest of the O.S. will revert back to defaults.
If still no success, then I would try to do a backup to an external hard drive, boot 
to the standard edition disc, delete the partition, create a new partition/format, 
and install.
Once it's done, I would try restoring the backup. If it doesn't take then the settings 
are written down for use after a clean install.
For your sake, I hope it doesn't go that far.
