I'm not exactly sure what the answer to this is.
I can tell you without a doubt that you can not simply change the product key and
re-activate. It just isn't going to happen.
However, a repair install might work. That is your only option. But, it has been
my experience that you can not "upgrade" (thats essentially what a repair install
is) to a more limited version of an OS. With windows Vista you can not upgrade from
Home Premium to Business edition because Business edition doesn't have the media
center stuff the home premium has. You can add functionality but you can not remove
it.
You can only try.. It should tell you before destroying anything that you can not
"upgrade" that version of windows.
Nevertheless, you should definitely have your important stuff backed up, and be prepared
for disaster recovery should something go horribly wrong.
My instinct tells me that you are going to have to do a fresh install and reconfigure
everything again. And, to be honest, this may be the best thing to do anyways for
the sake of stability and performance.
