Restoring a Back up into a virtual Server

I've created a backup of a physical server with windows server 2003 Standard SP1
installed and tried to restore the backup into a virtual server with SP1 installed
(different hardware though). when rebooting I started windows in safe mode to make
sure the hardware differences would be taken into account but windows never started
up after getting stuck on loading acpitabl.dat
I really appreciate any help.
