Not a Genuine product

My computer has been freezing up--almost every time I use it. Is it because my product
is not genuine?

Freezing up issues could have numerous causes. If your product is not genuine, it
would likely NOT just freeze up. more likely it is a virus, hardware device driver
issue, Heat issue, etc.

Is there a way to diagnose what is causing this? Would Yahoo's diagnostic likely
find it? I have run Avast antivirus and it comes up with "this is a password protected
file" on numerous Lavasoft files and one other Windows file (I can't find the paper
where I wrote down the exact description.) Are these messages significant?

You can safely ignore the password protected files being reported by Lavasoft adaware
Se, those are normal. I would try the following things:
1. Start the computer normally, as soon as you get to the desktop, open task manager
and take note of all the processes running. If any processes have unknown names,
research the process names on google to determine if they are valid processes or
viral/trojan related.
2. Check Device manager for any Hardware I/O conflicts. Use the Event viewer and
check the Application and system Entries for any errors. Write down the Event Id
and error message of every one found that has a Warning or Critical designation.
3. Open the case and thoroughly blow out any dust and dirt, paying special attention
to the CPU fan and heatsink.
4. How long has this been happening? If you have a definate time frame as to when
this began, you may be able to simply use the System Restore feature to restore your
computer back to a time before this behavior started.
5. Download and run Hijackthis: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Use the "Scan and save a log" option and post the log if none of the above work.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give them a try and let you know how it goes.

MS research shows that a big percentage of cracked copies of its software downloaded
from the internet have spyware, trojans, and other malicious software embedded into
the programs.

And they probably say that just to discourage people from downloading their products.
While there are malicious files and the occassional unintentional virus passed on,
it goes against the reputation of these "pirate groups" to release products with
trojans in them. i.e. you're really at no more risk than installing a Microsoft product
with it's inherent security flaws than the risk of downloading cracked products.
In both cases, you have to be vigilant.
