Domain credentials not accepted on W2K member server

Have an issue that I've seen before, but almost a full day of searching has revealed nothing. We've got a small business server 2003 environment, with one 2K3 and one 2K server as member servers. The domain is running in Windows 2000 native mode. When I go to the 2K server and add members to the local administrative group, it pulls up the local SAM first, not AD. I am able to select AD and add such groups as "domain admins", but effectively things are not working. When I try to attach to this file server from a machine that does not yet belong to the domain, and I supply domain credentials, no go. Same thing in a DOS mode, which is imperative for laptop imaging. ???

I'd also like to add, that I ran the netdom command to look for servers within the
environment with:

netdom query /d:mydomain.com SERVER

and it returned a bunch of WORKSTATIONS, but no servers really, neither my W2K or
W2K3 servers were listed. I verified that there was a secure channel between my
server and the DC as well, no issues there.
